Know More About Baby’s Genetic Health
What is Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing?
Non-invasive prenatal testing is a blood test for identifying chromosomal abnormalities in high-risk pregnancies. The test is as simple as a blood draw and helps identify any genetic abnormalities in an unborn baby.
The NIPT Test: As Simple As It Can Get
NIPT test is similar to any other routine blood test. The pregnant woman’s blood sample is collected using a simple needle and syringe. The sample is then tested and analyzed for cfDNA in the blood.
cfDNA or Circulating free DNA is degraded blood fragments that circulate freely in the pregnant woman’s bloodstream. The cfDNA contains maternal DNA along with fetal genetic material. The cfDNA analysis highlights any risk of increase or decrease in the fetal genetic conditions.
Chromosomal (genetic) Abnormality Detected by NIPTS
NIPTS can accurately screen the three most common trisomies.
- Down Syndrome or trisomy 21 (Caused by Chromosome 21)
- Trisomy 18 (caused by extra chromosome 18)
- Trisomy 13 (caused by extra chromosome 13)
